A common question we hear at our service center is, “Is antifreeze coolant?” While the terms are often used interchangeably, coolant is actually a mixture of antifreeze and water. Usually, coolant mixtures will contain 50% antifreeze and 50% water. However, you can choose more potent (and more costly) coolant options that contain 70% antifreeze and 30% water. It might sound like antifreeze and coolant contradict one another, but they are both important to regulate the temperature of your vehicle.
Usually antifreeze is composed of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, and it is likely green, pink, or orange in color. Most vehicles require green antifreeze, but it is a good idea to consult your owner’s manual to see which type is required for your particular make and model.
Antifreeze is stored in your vehicle’s radiator and is connected by a reservoir in the engine bay. Your vehicle’s water pump circulates antifreeze throughout the engine to draw heat away from your engine that was produced during the combustion process. The now-hot coolant circulates back to the radiator, where it is cooled down by air. This process happens over and over again as you drive through Salem to ensure your vehicle operates at the proper temperature.
