Winter Driving Tips

Winter Tire

Driving in treacherous winter conditions in Hudson and Merrimack may seem daunting, but if you are well-prepared for the elements, you can drive safely and confidently even when weather conditions are less than ideal. Below, Tulley Mazda has created a guide featuring winter driving tips. You will find tips for driving in snow as well as how to get your car ready for harsh winter weather.

Tips for Driving During Winter

Winter weather in Lowell can change in an instant, so it is important to keep these tips for driving in snow and icy conditions in mind.

  • Stay home if possible. When weather conditions are challenging, only travel if you must.
  • One of the most important tips for driving in snow is to drive slowly. You need to lower your speed to adjust for less traction on slick roads.
  • Be sure to increase your following distance to 8-10 seconds.
  • Don’t power up when driving on hills. It can cause your wheels to spin. Remember to also avoid stopping while going up hills as well.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
  • Keep a full tank of gas or have your vehicle fully charged before heading out.
  • Keep a bag of sand or cat litter in your vehicle. If your vehicle gets stuck, put the sand or litter under the drive tires. Then, straighten the wheels and slowly accelerate.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter

In addition to following the tips for driving during winter listed above, it is also crucial to make sure that your vehicle is ready for colder temperatures.

  • Test your battery: When temperatures drop, battery power also drops.
  • Check tire pressure: Once again, colder temperatures can cause a drop in tire pressure.
  • Add windshield wiper fluid that is rated for -30 degrees.
  • Inspect wiper blades: Replace them if needed.
  • Prepare or purchase a winter car emergency kit.
  • Opt for winter tires if possible: If you have all-season tires, be sure that the tread depth is more than 2/32 of an inch.
