The hybrid car definition is quite simple: it runs on a combination of electric power and an internal combustion engine. The hybrid car hit the mainstream market in 1997 when Toyota released the Prius, and hybrids have only become more popular since. Today, tens of millions of hybrids have been sold all around the world from dozens of different auto manufacturers. There are three main categories of hybrids–parallel, series, and plug in–which we’ll discuss below.
Parallel Hybrid: Parallel hybrids are the most common type of hybrid vehicle, which evenly blends together gasoline and electric power. Both the electric motor and gasoline engine are connected to the transmission.
Series Hybrid: Series hybrids are a bit different from parallel hybrids in that only the electric motor is paired to the transmission. This means that the electric motor is the sole power source for series hybrids, with the gasoline engine functioning as a generator instead of an additional power source.
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): Plug-in hybrids have electric motors that need to be plugged in to recharge the battery, similar to a fully-electric vehicle. While this may sound like a drawback compared to parallel and series hybrids, which can recharge on the fly, it’s actually a benefit to you! PHEVs have much larger battery packs that offer impressive all-electric range numbers, meaning you can drive around Merrimack without using any gasoline. PHEVs save a lot on gasoline costs – less than a fully-electric EV but usually more than the other types of hybrids.
