How to Be Fuel Efficient When Driving

When you’re cruising down Nashua roads in a powerful vehicle like a Mazda CX-3 or even an efficient Mazda3, you’re probably thinking about how to maximize your fuel efficiency. Even in well-designed vehicles, there’s proactive steps drivers can take to truly maximize their mpg in Hudson. Tulley Mazda covers fuel efficient driving habits below.

Fuel Efficient Driving Habits

There are many factors to consider when it comes to how to be fuel efficient. How hard should I press down on my brakes? And how can you save fuel while driving on hills? These are just a few of the questions that Merrimack drivers ask the experts at our service center. Here’s some answers and other tips on fuel efficient driving habits:

  • Avoid Traffic: Traffic isn’t just a total headache. All that stop-and-go movement is hard on your drivetrain and compromises your fuel efficiency. If you’re really set on improving your mpg, start planning ahead of and around traffic jams.
  • Stay Between 55 mph and 65 mph on highways: High speeds can waste a lot of fuel. Always follow the speed limits while trying to maintain a max of 65 mph as you’re coasting down Lowell highways. Controlling speed is one of the simplest tricks for how to be fuel efficient.
  • Accelerate Slowly: Having a lead foot on your accelerator can waste fuel. The general rule of thumb is that it should take five seconds to go from a standstill to 10 mph.
  • Coast to Stop: If you can do so safely, it’s much better for fuel economy to coast to a stop instead of constantly applying brakes. Like with the last example, a lead foot is fuel effeciency’s worst enemy.
  • Hills: How can you save fuel while driving on hills? Apply the coasting method and let your car’s momentum do the work to get you downhill.
  • Air Conditioning: Many drivers know that the air conditioning system in your car uses fuel; many don’t know that it can increase your fuel usage by up to 20 percent! So, how do you solve this problem? The recirculate function is your friend in this case, as it uses less energy than blasting the AC.
