What is the Difference Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned?

2020 Mazda CX-3

A common question we hear at the Tulley Mazda showroom is, “What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned models?” While CPO vehicles are technically still “used” cars, there are a few important distinctions that set CPO vehicles apart from the used vehicles at Tulley Mazda. Compare CPO vs. used below to help you find the perfect new-to-you vehicle.

Shopping for a Used Car

Used vehicles have had at least one previous owner, and the models in stock at our showroom can vary widely in terms of model year, mileage, and number of previous owners. That is why used cars have a lower sticker price than brand new vehicles. Because these vehicles aren’t new, you don’t have to worry about the steep depreciation associated with driving home a brand new car.

While a car with 100,000 miles or more was once deemed a risk, that is not always the case anymore. Thanks to advancements in automotive technology, vehicles are lasting longer than ever. A well-maintained vehicle can last for hundreds of thousands of miles on the roads of Hudson. There are still a few factors to keep in mind when shopping for a used car:

  • It is not an OEM requirement for standard used vehicles to be inspected before they are sold. Dealerships like Tulley Mazda will still inspect the used cars currently in stock, but the same cannot be said for many private sellers. If you are planning to buy a used car from a private seller, it should be inspected by a mechanic before you make an offer.
  • Take the vehicle for a test drive and do not hesitate to discuss any issues in terms of vehicle condition or performance that you notice. You want to make sure that the vehicle is safe for the roads of Merrimack. If the used car you desire needs a little TLC, make sure you factor the cost of repairs into your budget.
  • Some cars and SUVs can last more than 200,000 miles when they are maintained as the manufacturer intended.

Shopping for a CPO Car

To be designated as a CPO vehicle, a car must undergo and pass a thorough inspection by a certified technician. What else can you expect from a Mazda CPO vehicle?

  • A CPO Limited Vehicle Warranty of 12 months or up to 12,000 miles
  • 7-Year/100,000-Mile CPO Limited Powertrain Warranty
  • 24-hour emergency roadside assistance
  • AutoCheck® vehicle history report
  • 3-month trial subscription to the SiriusXM All Access package

Certified used cars are typically newer models with less mileage. This is why they are priced higher than standard used cars.
