What Does the “W” on a Multi-Grade Motor Oil Mean?

Motor oil is a necessary ingredient in your engine. Motor oil provides the lubrication necessary to keep metal parts separated from one another, reducing wear and heat. To successfully lubricate connecting parts, motor oil must be thick enough to cling to the parts and thin enough to flow freely throughout the engine.

The thick/thin ratio of motor oil is called its viscosity. You find your manufacturers motor oil viscosity in your owner’s manual. Multi-Grade motor oils are oils capable of lubricating at different temperatures. The “W” stands for the viscosity or the motor oil during “winter,” the coldest part of the year. The other number, such as in 10W-40 is the viscosity level during the warm months of summer.

When you change your oil here at Tulley Mazda in Nashua, NH, you are assured that the correct oil is used every oil change.
